    Introduction

Rangitoto Toastmasters Club is part of Toastmasters International, which is a global organisation. There are over 50 clubs in Auckland, more than 200 clubs throughout New Zealand, and over 9000 clubs around the world.

The club operates around the Toastmasters International Communication and Leadership program. On joining Toastmasters you receive a manual containing ten speeches which incrementally builds your speech presenting skills and does not require any previous experience. In addition, you will have the support of the club members and your own mentor who can help you through your first few speeches.

    The Club

Rangitoto Toastmasters Club was formed in October 1978 and recently celebrated its 25th Anniversary. It prides itself on a friendly atmosphere which generates a lot of laughs, support, education and a great opportunity for self development. Members have received value from their time in the club and many members’ careers have really benefited from the skills gained, personal growth and development.

Rangitoto continually fares well at the local competitions which are held every year. New members are fortunate to be able to draw on the experiences of their fellow members.

What can Rangitoto Toastmasters Club offer you?

Rangitoto Toastmasters offers you the opportunity to step outside your comfort zone and practise speaking in front of an audience. We are a small club so we feel that it may not be as daunting to learn your skills here as it might be in front of some other larger numbered clubs.
There are varied activities during the year, with many speaking opportunities available.
You can decide what you participate in and the speaking opportunities can include:
    • Speeches
    • Evaluations
    • Thinking on your feet sessions called “Table Topics” or "Impromptu Speeches"
    • Debating
    • Contests
    • Inter-club visits
    • Leadership skills
    • Judging opportunities
    • Chairing a meeting
    • Meeting duties
The people are of varying ages and experience and you will receive a lot of support and encouragement to enable you to develop your confidence at a rate that is comfortable to you.

We enjoy getting together socially and have a mid-year dinner and prize giving. We present trophies and awards for competition winners and praise members that have done well during the year. We usually have an informal meeting, for example a barbecue, towards the end of the year with our families and this is an ideal opportunity to say thank you for supporting us during the year.

    Club Contests

For those who want to go further, each year Toastmasters Clubs run contests in which their members may choose to test their skills and compete. There are several levels to the contest, starting with the in-club contests, leading to Area, then Division, and right through to a national contest. At the top level, one representative from New Zealand travels over to the USA to compete in the International Speech Contest. There are many opportunities to take your speaking skills far and wide. How far you go is up to you! Joining Rangitoto Toastmasters is a small step towards greater achievements!
